“The possibility of intense and conventional war in Europe is no longer a fantasy, and we must obviously do everything to avoid it,” said Josep Borrell, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, during the Nueva Economia Forum held in Brussels. According to Borrell, the next European step should be to build “a common security and defense” for all member states, although “war is not imminent and will not start tomorrow.” The purpose is to “make European citizens understand that the U.S. umbrella that protected us during and after the Cold War will not be open all the time,” which probably depends on “who governs in Washington,” explained the High Representative. “Of course, NATO will be irreplaceable, but within it, we must build our own pillar,” he concluded.
